Crystal Clear 550 Glass Clearing agent is designed to dissolve alkaline residue stains, iridescence surface stains and stage 1 corrosion on uncoated, clear, and float-glass surfaces. Crystal Clear 550 cannot correct stageĀ II corrosion and may visually expose more of the existing corrosion.
Crystal Clear 550 is effective on most types of building glass and, when used properly, will make windows sparkling clean and optically clear as new. Always check glass, both inside and out, for potential damage before clearing each window.

Much of what happens to glass is so gradual that one does not often see anything wrong with the window. It is not until the window is washed and the haze remains, that the damage is noticed. Part of the visible haze may be mineral deposits, structure runoff, pollution in the air or other contaminates, which attach tenaciously to the glass. Such deposits damage glass and do not readily come off with just regular washing.
Overtime these surface deposits and etching of the glass can be perceived as cloudiness or hazing. This is known as stage I and stage II corrosion. Stage I corrosion can be cleared so that visibility is restored to the glass.
Stage II corrosion may look hazy, white or even in some cases clear, as it holds on to the damaged particles until they are released by cleaning or clearing the glass. Cloudiness occurs because the light is refracted irregularly as it passes through the irregular surface of the damaged glass.
This refracted light appears to the human eye, without magnification, as a general whitening or haziness of the glass.
CRYSTAL CLEAR 550 will clear away only mineral deposits and damaged glass from the surface and may expose stage II corrosion. Stage II corrosion is usually not correctable using compounds such as CRYSTAL CLEAR 550 and can be made worse by any attempt to clear. That is why the product label and literature expresses to test every window before clearing. If the pre-existing damage is substantial then mechanical polishing or glass replacement may be necessary.
“Smears go away while surface is wet and reappear as soon as it is dry again” – generally this is an indication that the glass is in stage II corrosion.

READ INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USE.
USE STRAIGHT OR DILUTED BY 50% WITH COOL WATER. ALWAYS WEAR RUBBER GLOVES, PROTECTIVE CLOTHING, BOOTS AND SPLASH GOGGLES. AVOID CONTACT WITH SKIN.
Always use plastic pails and containers. Do not use metal or painted containers.
Clean window glass before using CRYSTAL CLEAR-550. CRYSTAL CLEAR-550 is NOT a cleaner.
ALWAYS TEST GLASS BEFORE APPLYING CRYSTAL CLEAR-550 TO ENTIRE WINDOW.
Check for surface coatings and residues such as silicone treatment, building sealer and waxes. (According to some glass manufacturers, silicone treatments and building sealers may be removed by applying toluene first to soften the film and a low abrasive rubbing compound to remove the residue.)
CHECK BOTH SIDES OF GLASS FOR STAGE II CORROSION. (GLASS WILL USUALLY TURN WHITE WITH COATINGS AND STAGE II CORROSION WHEN TESTED.) STAGE II CORROSION IS NOT CORRECTABLE AND GLASS SHOULD BE REPLACED.
Apply CRYSTAL CLEAR-550 with a natural sponge or a clean, white cloth. Wring sponge or cloth to prevent runoff. Keep solution from running down any building or other surfaces. If product runs down the glass, it is being overused. Apply for one to two minutes, then rinse with water or a dilute solution of trisodium phosphate. Repeat as necessary.
DO NOT USE CRYSTAL CLEAR-550 ON WINDOW FRAMES OR ANY NON-GLASS SURFACE. DO NOT USE ON SELF-CLEANING (TITANIUM) GLASS. RINSE AWAY ANY SPILLS IMMEDIATELY.
NOTE: If glass becomes hazed or white, proceed no further until you can determine if it is a coating, building sealer or Stage II corrosion, or if given permission by supervision or building management personnel.
CAUTION:
Contains Acid: CAS 7664-39-3. Do not take internally. Do not rub in with fingers or permit contact with skin or eyes. Always wash hands and contaminated skin after using, paying particular attention to skin under nails. Avoid breathing vapors.
